Take Stock Week 3

I need to better my notes and not limit myself in the amount I write. I notice that I only take notes on what I understand, but I feel I should take notes on what I don’t understand so that I can follow and do some research or dig deeper.

Weekly Review: The Two Readings That I Liked

This week’s readings were quite interesting. I liked them better than last week’s readings, honestly. I felt there was more backstory to them, or more historical content. There was a lot more to read but it wasn’t overwhelming. I still struggle on breaking down my notes a bit more when it comes to the reading. I feel that if I overdo the notes with the reading I’ll get lost in what I am trying to understand. The readings are sometimes are hard to understand, and to take notes on something I don’t understand, I feel is a lie. I do enjoy taking notes on the ones I did understand this week. In this week’s reading, I really liked  The Luck of Roaring Camp and Self-Reliance  because they were two that really stuck with me.  Self-Reliance was very moving and I can see why it can be correlated to the Western natives lifestyle.  The Luck of Roaring Camp was also one I really liked because it spoke about more than one theme. The many themes of the story were: love, gluttony,...

Wikipedia Trail

Initial:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Republic Internal link:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Dewell Third Link:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariano_Guadalupe_Vallejo The first article tells the history of the California Republic and how the Bear Flag Party came about. This article tells the history of Benjamin Dewell, an early American settler and rancher. He was a member of the “Bear Flag Party” and participated in the Bear Flag Revolt. In the article it is said that Dewell was born in 1821 and he fought in the Bear Flag Revolt. The third article tells the history of Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. He was a California general, statesman, and public figure. Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo was a rancher and military commander who was granted land by the Spanish. He was taken prison by ragtag band of Americans. Vallejo lost the trust of his people after he failed to execute his promises.

Growth Mindset Week 3

I chose to read “A Growth Mindset Fuels Creativity in Youth” by Marilyn Price-Mitchell, PhD (https://www.rootsofaction.com/growth-mindset-fuels-creativity/). The reading defines growth mindset as, “ A growth mindset is when students believe that their abilities can be developed ,” says Carol Dweck. The development of a child’s mindset, is when they see their creative work in progress, which is something that goes hand in hand with the idea of growing and changing. I learned that there are 5 ways to foster growth in mindset in adolescences and the one that was very interesting was bow to mistakes made. After reading it, it was a great idea because you have to learn from your mistake but instead of bashing yourself for it, you embrace it.  Photo by Google

Feedback Strategies

I liked this week’s readings. I chose to read to “Be a Mirror” by Gravity Goldberg and “Try Feedfoward Instead of Feedback” by Marshall Goldsmith. In Goldberg’s reading, I found that the article was implementing the idea of providing feedback that would better the person’s mindset and help them in the future and even in their daily life. I liked the five qualities of feedback: Be specific, focus on what the reader is doing, focus on the process, make sure it can transfer, and take yourself out of the feedback. The one I felt was the most interesting was the “take yourself out of the feedback” because it’s the removal of oneself and making it personal by using the person’s name. If you allow yourself to see yourself as the student, you can provide better feedback that will change them and their mindsets.  “Try Feedfoward Instead of Feedback” by Marshall Goldsmith states:   There is a fundamental problem with all types of feedback: it focuses on the past, on what has al...

Week 3 Analysis: To Live with Those who Suffer Too

James Whitfield’s poem “Self-Reliance” speaks of the theme of reliance, the need to depend or trust someone, for the sake of ones’ happiness, the ways of life, and the realization that our strength reflects from within us. It also tells the story about a man’s conscience informed by Christianity. Ways of finding happiness is through others who surround you during difficult times. Whitfield states: “When numerous friends, whose cheerful tone/In happier hours once cheered him on,/With visions that full brightly shone,”(Whitfield). Whitfield doesn’t signify his target audience, but he defies it openly. One must have people around them to get through the harshest and darkest of times. He uses words like cheerful, happier, brightly to indicate that he knows of love in various forms. Whitfield says “with visions that full brightly shone” expressing that someone or something can see the brighter side of these harsh moments.  Whitfield states how being in love also defines our yout...
