Introduction

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, in a small town called Daly City. It is the largest city in San Mateo with population of 100,000 people (City of Daly City). Hence, it was a tightly knit community where I spent most of my early childhood. In the early 2000’s, I moved to the East Bay along the San Joaquin-Sacramento River Delta in a small town called Antioch. I spent my formative years in the area and was studying in high school called the Deer Valley. I felt the environment at Deer Valley and extra-curricular activities were conducive to study. What is more, it is one of the best state schools in California, with  good academic structure, teachers, staff, and facilities. I finished my studies there and went on to pursue my dream of a career in sales. Upon assessing my strengths and consulting with my teachers, I understood that I have strong communication skills and can find approach to most of people. For this reason, I suppose I would be able to success in the sales and marketing field. I am also excited by the prospect of meeting new people and influencing their choices; I would aspire to help buyers define their preferences. Hence, the challenge of changing people’s buying habits is exciting for me. I think that the associate degree in business obtained in California State School will give me the environment to advance my skills and further receive the Bachelor of Science degree in business . It has always been a dream of mine to be a part of such a prestigious institution, and I hope to make the most of this opportunity.

  2. Hi, Samuel! How interesting your dream is! I mean, I have never seen anyone sharing the same dream. It is surprising!
I don't know how it works here in the US, but where I come from people usually don't like to work in sales because it's too stressful and they need to be in a constant competition to make more money than their colleagues. That's why I found it so interesting and completely new! Also, the fact that you can use your communications skills to influence people's choice and also their lives is fantastic! I wish I could be that influent, too...

  3. Hi Samuel, I also grew up in a small town near here. It's a totally different atmosphere in small towns where everyone knows each other. There's a sense of community you don't often find in bigger cities where everyone tends to keep to themselves. Good luck with your business aspirations, it's sounds like you're definitely on the right track to make that happen for yourself! Communication skills are a must but it sounds like this is already a strength of yours. Good luck this semester!

  4. Hi Samuel, I think it's great that you know what you want to do as well as have the skills to succeed. I went to Dozier which is pretty close to deer valley and also grew up in a small town where everybody knew everybody which was great since I had most of my friends on my street or close by. It is great that you found a passion to help others and that you have the communication skills to to do so.

  5. Hi Samuel,
It is so fun to see how different a person's view of "big city" / "small town" can be. For me, growing up in a city with a population barley reaching 23,000, your 100,000 citizens is a BIG city. My high school graduating class was 26!
So what kind of sales are you interested in? Communication and inter-personal skills are huge assets to have and practice in the sales industry. It sounds like you are very passionate for sales so I have no doubt you will be successful.

    Best of luck!
    Amanda

  6. Hi Samuel,
I too lived in the same area but attended Heritage High in Brentwood. A career in sales would be perfect for you as you said you have excellent people and public speaking skills. Achieving a bachelors degree is an awesome goal, and something we share in common as id like to eventually obtain my bachelors degree as well.

  7. Happy Sunday Samuel!
How do you like living in Antioch after living in Daly City? I bet the weather was a lot cooler, it gets really hot here in the summer. I went to Antioch High School and had a lot of friends that went to Deer Valley. I think sales is a great career, especially if you like meeting new people and the challenge of persuading them to buy what you are selling. There are so many different types of sales jobs, from cars, medical supplies to doctors and hospitals, construction equipment. I know a guys who works for 3M and sells different types of tapes. Good luck!

  8. Hello Samuel,

Thank you for sharing that bit about Deer Valley High School. I graduated high school from another country, and it's really different from high school here (from what I see on movies). My brother attends Deer Valley, so your words made me complacent. I think it's great that you are pursuing your dream. Communication skills is one of the highest sought skill by all companies. Your resilience is an inspiration to me.

    Thank you,
    Regina

  9. Hi Samuel! It is interesting you say that Antioch is small, I don't find it that small since it stretches along Lone Tree Way. I have visited Daly City, but I have not lived there but compared to Daly City yes Antioch is probably smaller, but the population is probably about the same or more since you said Daly City has a population of 100K. Since Antioch is a lot different that Daly City, which do you like most? I think it is great you are pursuing a Business Degree. I enjoyed reading your introduction, thanks for sharing!

Reading Notes W15 : Moten, Part B

Fred Moten Born in 1962 and raised in Las Vegas Focuses on black studies, poetry, and critical theory The Salve Trade The poem of Fred Moten is hard to understand, the reader should look at it in a different way. This poem is about the idea of the slave trade and Fred Moten just rearrange the letters and come up with slave trade. The poem also uses the technique it which it jumps from thoughts to thoughts which makes it interesting to read because it does not really show what the real issue it discusses. There are also a lot of things that occur in the poem which makes it really hard to understand the poem. It mostly shows the idea of black people which was not directly quoted but   Moten uses the phrase “I started reading my paper and ash flew from their big ol’” which describe the skin color of the black people.
